Pelvic floor dysfunction refers to a group of conditions where the muscles, ligaments, or tissues of the pelvic floor are not functioning properly. Often, it involves fatigued muscles that are difficult to control, causing problems with the three Ps—pain, peeing, and pooping.
Symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction may look like:
- Pelvic pain
- Urinary incontinence
- Painful sex
- Difficulty with bowel movements
These are not all the symptoms, just some of the most common ones. You can also develop knots in your pelvic muscles that cause acute pain, especially during intimate moments. An important thing to keep in mind is that between 13% and 32% of women worldwide deal with pelvic pain—sometimes so much so that they cannot attend work.
