As a patient suffering from chronic pelvic pain for over a decade, I have read my fair share of articles and books on this topic. What makes Dr. Stoehr’s book unique is how she explains, in-depth, how the brain processes pain. Once you understand this process, you can start to make sense of why and how your body is experiencing pain. Each of the 15 methods she recommends are easy, inexpensive, and can be practiced in the comfort of your home. I like how she emphasizes that it isn’t necessary to obtain a diagnosis in order to start trying things to reduce pain while you wait to get in with specialists. I wish I had this attitude in the beginning of my chronic pelvic pain journey. The worrying that comes along with potential diagnoses takes up headspace that you could be using towards reducing your pain. What really makes this book stand out is Dr. Stoehr’s positive, reassuring tone and her words of encouragement. The reader can almost feel her personality and charm between the lines. She offers a fresh outlook on an otherwise bleak topic. “When it Hurts Down There” would make a great addition to any pelvic physician or pelvic floor physical therapist’s library.
